Plant-based chocolate

Over the past few years, there has been a notable trend towards substituting animal products with plant-based alternatives due to growing concerns about health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. Although extensive research has been conducted on why people opt for plant-based alternatives for meat, cheese, and milk, little attention has been given to products that blend both plant and animal ingredients. One such product that has been gaining popularity is chocolate made with plant-based ingredients.

Given the increasing demand for plant-based chocolate and its potential as a lucrative market, we have initiated a market study to examine the current state of the plant-based chocolate industry, including available brands in retail and consumer awareness and experiences. We chose the Netherlands as our initial focus due to its rich chocolate tradition and high level of consumer adoption of plant-based products. Our analysis of available plant-based chocolate products in retail and a recent consumer survey form the basis of the findings we present in this article. Our research will be extended to other European countries over the coming months.
